Promising Television Presenter, Regina Van-Helvert has shaved off her hair just to take on a role as a cancer patient in a new movie titled “Swings”.
The host of “Rhythms Live” on GH One TV who is fast rising in the movie industry, said she didn’t expect to get such challenging roles especially in her early stage as an actress, but had to risk losing her hair for the first time; eventhough she concedes the risk was worth it.
“I never thought there would be a point in my acting career that would demand that I shave my hair off but the character I played influenced it. After reading the script I was given an option to either shave off all my hair or use the bald cup but I wanted to connect more and immerse myself with the character so I decided to go all out for it”.
Regina played the lead role of a cancer patient, Toni, who was going through chemotherapy and she admits the role was emotional and very challenging.
“My character was a young girl who in the pursuit of love and happiness discovered she had a terminal illness. It was very challenging because I had to immerse myself into Toni’s character and it obviously wasn’t an easy role, as I had to play a very sick and bubbly girl at the same time. The switch between characters was fast paced. But thanks to the amazing cast, crew and the producer who made the task less tedious than it would have been”.

Ghanaian singer eShun has announced her appointment as Ghanaian representative for the United Nations High commission for refugees ‘Statelessness’ project during an interview with some media houses including Happy 98.9 FM’s entertainment show host Dr. Cann on showbiz X’tra last Saturday, 4th November.
When asked to brief listeners about the whole project, she said “Stateless person is someone who is “not considered as a national by any state under the operation of its law”. Some stateless persons are also refugees. However, not all refugees are stateless, and many persons who are stateless have never crossed an international border. Although many states allow the acquisition of nationality through parental descent irrespective of where the child is born, some do not allow female citizens to confer nationality to their children”. She added, “There are 27 countries in the world that do not grant equal rights to women in passing on their nationality. This can result in statelessness when the father is stateless, unknown, or otherwise unable to confer nationality.
There have been recent changes in favor of gender neutrality in nationality laws, including reform processes in Algeria, Morocco, and Senegal that may inform change elsewhere. For example, Algeria amended its nationality code to repeal the limitations on mothers’ ability to confer nationality on their children, replacing them with an overarching provision granting Algerian nationality to all children born in or outside Algeria to an Algerian mother or father. Moreover, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women prohibits sex-based discrimination in the conferral of nationality.
Earlier on her social media (@eShunonline) updates: “I am honoured to collaborate with United Nations High Commission On Refugees West Africa in the iBelong Campaign as part of @unhcrghana effort to eradicate Statelessness in the world. There are 10 Million people in the world who do not belong to any country and out of this number 1 Million are in West Africa. I pledge my support to help eradicate this man made problem. #iBelong #SomeOneLovesMe #SimpleAsABC

According to United Nations High commission for refugees, an important measure to prevent statelessness at birth provides nationality to children born in a territory who would otherwise be stateless. This norm is stipulated in the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness; appears in several regional human rights treaties, including the American Convention on Human Rights, the European Convention on Nationality, and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child; and is implicit in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The announcement of the collaboration with eShun was made two weeks ago in a meeting at the UNHCR head office by Nii Ako Sowa, communication/ Public information associate. Speaking about how she feels being the one selected in Ghana on Class 91.3 FM, she said “I am honoured to be named Ghana’s representative for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees ‘Statelessness’ project. I am passionate about seeing to it that the rate at which people find themselves in this situation will be reduced. I would like for us all to join in the drive to reduce the harmful effects of Statelessness in Africa and the world at large.”
“I look forward to engaging all and sundry to take part to make the world a better place to live. Visit the iBelong Page on unhcr.org/iBelong and Sign the petition to end Statelessness”. She added.
eShun will leave the country on Wednesday, 8th November to join other selected African musicians to collaborate on a song titled iBelong against ‘Statelessness’ and will be back on 12th November. She is expected to perform one of her songs during the anniversary celebration in Dakar, Senegal.

She had consistently given standout performances and was largely tipped to win but first female winner of music reality show, MTN Hitmaker, Freda Rhymz says she was surprised by her victory.
Her surprise can be justified as the previous winners of the last five editions of the singing reality show had all been males and she was up against two talented guys.
Last Wednesday, November 1, Freda also known as ‘Datchickno’ was crowned Hitmaker after battling contenders, Drew, Yaw Berk and Xali in two rounds of exciting performances at the National Theatre.
In an interview with Showbiz right after she was crowned, Freda said, “My win is a surprise to me. I was not expecting it but I will attribute it to the fact that I listened to everything the judges said every single time after my performance.
I gave them the reverence bearing in mind that they have foresight and see beyond me so I listened to them.
“I cannot also forget the God factor, God did it and I am super excited,” she said.
For Freda, her win should be an inspiration to women that they can do anything they set their minds to. “Women should know that they can also do it.

It has never happened, this is the first time a female has grabbed the title and it tells us that we should strive to do away with the notion that women cannot do anything.”
She dedicated her win to everyone, especially those who supported her.
She was grateful to the judges, Francis Doku, Caroline Sampson and Kaywa for their input saying her time in the Hitmaker house had been very insightful.
On when we can expect to hear any new material from her, she said, “I am not in a rush to start releasing songs like everyone expects me to.
I am taking my time so that whatever comes out will be great stuff.”
Great stuff it will be as MTN Ghana has revealed that she will be working with arguably Ghana’s biggest rapper, Sarkodie.
As winner of MTN Hitmaker Season 6, Freda took home a GH¢100, 000 recording contract as well as a video shoot worth $5,000 fully sponsored by Content Connect Ghana.
Although it is usually a winner takes all competition, this year, second-placed, Drew was the surprise recipient of a whopping GH¢20,000 aimed at helping him in his music career.
The night was laced with performances from Kidi, Kuami Eugene, Koo Ntakra and F9 all past Hitmaker contestants.
MTN Hitmaker 6 was hosted by EIB Network’s Berla Mundi and Giovanni Caleb.
