Sign Petition: Alliance For Change In Ghana Music Industry

The Alliance For Change In Ghana Music is calling on all music industry stake holders to come together to fight for a final and lasting solution to our failing music industry.

Creating music or doing anything that contributes to the music industry or music business in Ghana, should be able to sustain any creator during their prime and also retirement but unfortunately this isn’t the case. For far too long, the Ghana Music Industry has seen majority of its stakeholders work very hard but receive very little or no income for their hard work and dedication, through no fault of theirs but due to a failed system which gets worse by the years.

Musicians, song writers, Djs/presenters, backing vocalists ,artist managers, producers, entertainment journalists, etc. struggle to make ends meet or die poor, after several years of dedicating their lives to a trade which should have supported their livelihood. There is also lack of proper education and/or awareness about the business aspect of the music industry across board.

This is why we have come together as an alliance to advocate for, educate and create realistic & pro-active solutions to the challenges in the Music Industry.

We are therefore advocating for/working to:

1. Get Ghana Music Industry plugged into the global music business in order to attract multinational record labels, publishing companies, booking agents, major event promoters, Investors and also educate stakeholders in Ghana music industry.

2. Fully digitise the royalties collection system, including implementation of radio logging/radio monitoring systems, song identification for easy logging, tracking and exploitation as well as, set royalty rate per play for television and radio stations.

3. Seek modern ways of generating income for the music industry i.e. to attract digital service providers such as Spotify, Apple Music etc. to actively and consistently support Ghanaian music on their global platforms.

4. To sanitise the music industry by ensuring transparency and accountability through the establishment of rigorous and robust checks within our professional bodies, to prevent incompetence and corrupt practices.

5. To create a booming music industry economy thereby enabling creative people make most of their income in Ghana, before expanding to other countries in the world.

A thriving economy will mean creative people will be able to pay their fair share of taxes in Ghana and also contribute to national or private pension schemes.

This petition with your signature will be presented to the relevant institutions in Ghana. Once presented, we aim to have formal meetings with the institutions to discuss and find effective, lasting and practical solutions to our systemic issues.

ALLIANCE FOR CHANGE IN GHANA MUSIC INDUSTRY! TOGETHER WE WIN!

Charity Organisation Talk2Tiana Donates To Mental Health Facilities In Ghana

In their quest to fight the snowballing deadly coronavirus pandemic which has claimed millions of lives, the charity organization Talk2Tiana has donated items worth thousands of cedis to mental health facilities in Ghana.

The donation which took place in Accra through the Mental Health Authority saw the Accra Psychiatric hospital, Ankaful, and Pantang general hospital receive sanitary towels, face masks, hand sanitizers, and water to the various hospitals. The foundation then went on to distribute food items, to the Adabraka Polyclinic and those less fortunate on the streets of Accra.

Presenting the items to the mental health authority, founder of the foundation, Tiana, underscored the need to champion mental health awareness and also donate to mental health patients in the country.

According to her, during this pandemic she’s noticed that there has been a lack of psychological support to help people with their wellbeing during this time. Also as the UK marks mental health awareness week, it was prudent to show love to patients in the various mental health facilities whilst in Ghana.

Receiving the items on behalf of the mental health authority was the Director of Administration, Mr. Victus Kwaku Kpesese, and Head of communications Mr. Kwaku Brobbey. They spoke on behalf of the CEO, Dr. Akwasi Osei, and thanked the team for their benevolence towards the mental health facilities in Ghana. Mr. Kpesese and Mr. Brobbey assured that all the items will get to the respective facilities. Mr. Kpesese then furthermore assured the ministry’s preparedness to collaborate on other initiatives to help mental health in Ghana.

“Thank you all for reaching out to us and especially our patients through your charity this morning. We would like to assure you that every item you brought to us will get to the targeted groups, the 3 hospitals operating under us. I would like to assure you that we are more than prepared to collaborate with you as far as mental health is concerned”.

She further seized the opportunity to thank Delay, Yazz Ghana, Special Ice mineral water, Qwick sanitizer, and sa4a for their immense contribution towards the project.

Why Only 66% of African Health Ministers are Medical Doctors – Prince Akpah

In this time of a global crisis where the world is faced with graving concerns on how to fight the coronavirus, I am deeply concerned about the readiness of Africa’s leadership as this has become a testing period for our leaders to showcase their experience in regards to occupying the distinguished position as health ministers in Africa.

With worrying predictions from the World Health Organisation and other international NGOs, about how the continent will be hit with lots of cases and eventually deaths because of the lack of adequate and well-equipped health facilities, this whole period does not only scare us but presents an opportunity for African leaders to prove their worth and showcase how prepared they are to engineer the development of the health sector in the shortest possible time.

During my research on listing who health ministers in Africa are, I developed an interest to also look at their professional backgrounds and how qualified they are to occupy such position beyond their political affiliations. Through this, I discovered out of the 54 countries on the continent, only 36 representing 66% have health ministers with backgrounds in the medical field either as a practitioner or a professor. With their combined experience, we can safely assert that African countries with health minister with medical backgrounds will have enough understanding of their health systems and how they can fix the challenges emanating.

Borrowing from the fact that a lot of African traditions also believe in that tender, loving and caring nature of women, I also discovered that, only 14 women occupy the position of health ministers across the whole continent. These counties are Angola, Burkina Faso, Comoros, Congo Republic, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda. Accepting the empirical fact that women are better managers than men, one wonders why there are not a lot more women health ministers across Africa.

As this is a testing period for all health ministers who are on the frontline of beating this global pandemic, I’m sitting looking at the result of my research and wondering ‘will these individuals be able to deal with COVID19 now that the cases on the continent are skyrocketing. Will they politicize everything they do, as usual, or will they abandon us by resigning in the eleventh hour. Worst still, maybe they’ll seek support from the USA, Europe or Asia as African leaders are known for. Ironically, most of these ‘developed’ countries are more hard hit with this pandemic than Africa. So how are they going to help us when they need the resources most now?

With a look at how political leaders are appointed, I believe that as Africans, we must begin to question our leaders to become accountable to us beyond the ballot box and must ensure they are first leaders in their field of experience before being politicians or we will continue to complain of the model of leadership on the continent which mostly is characterised by the idiomatic expression, “square peg in a round hole”.

Is Bisa Kdei's "Ofie Nipa" with Sista Afia directed to the media?

Undoubtedly, the man of the moment Bisa Kdei has been making headlines for the past couple of days regarding a tweet that was sent out during his Question and Answers segment on Twitter

This tweet sends a message that the media in Ghana is “fake” and as the usual, the entire media in Ghana is calling for answers as to why the multiple award winning singer will make that statement.

During an interview with Bisa Kdei yesterday on OKAY FM, Abeiku Santana asked Bisa Kdei why that tweet was sent out. After Bisa Kdei answered by saying the tweet had a “wrong” meanings by some media people, Abeiku quickly concluded that this was another strategy by Bisa Kdei to push his new song titled “Ofie Nipa” which features the hottest female artist at the moment, Sista Afia

After that statement by Abeiku Santana, many people have been wondering if indeed this was a way of Bisa Kdei getting in the news to push this new project, #OfieNipa.

If we are to believe the song is a message to “some media” guys as being projected outside, then one media person we can confirm is Kofi Asamoah (Kofas) who has been very emotional about this tweet, and have started attacking Bisa Kdei directly.

Listening to the song, it talks about how some trusted people can betray us in life and how people can easily manipulate your reputation because of the hatred they have for you. This to me has nothing to do with its relation to the media, however, a general message that we all in a way or the other can relate to.

Let’s listen/watch the message of #OfieNipa by Bisa Kdei and Sista Afia from below

Sarkodie - Bumper (Prod. By Rexxie)

Rapper Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, says he was able to ink a deal abroad with the help of Shatta Wale’s ‘Already’ song with Beyonce.

The ‘Highest’ rapper formed part of the tall list of celebrities who lauded the dancehall artiste when his music project with pop icon Beyonce dropped off ‘The Lion King; the Gift album.’

Ghanaians, especially music lovers, were stunned after receiving the news that the Shatta Movement boss had recorded with the wife of ace rapper Jay-Z.

.

Sarkodie congratulated Shatta and even added that the song was his favorite on the project, which included many African stars.

Though, there was a brawl between Sarkodie and Shatta Wale when the song was released, Sarkodie said it worked the magic for him.

Speaking on the Dentaa show, Sarkodie said some “white” men who wanted to do a deal with him were pushed to ink it after the song made waves on social media.

I didn’t see only Shatta winning. I was having meetings with people trying to seal this deal. They didn’t see the whole Afrobeat thing and then same week Beyonce drops the song; I was thinking more about me because that move got me through the contract.

That is where my state of mind was… if you don’t, then you will lose out, Sarkodie said.

Sarkodie, meanwhile, continued to explain why the music industry had to push Shatta Wale’s win.

If Beyonce doesn’t get the response from us, its not gonna happen again. That means if Beyonce failed then no one is coming to do that again, he said.
