Ugly x Tough

Ghanaian music is experiencing a massive global sonic shift, and right at the center of this evolutionary spark is the producer duo Ugly x Tough. Composed of Gabriel Addo Mensah (known artistically as Ugly, who often prefers Addo Mensah) and Isaac Nii Yemo Odoi (Tough, formerly known as GMK), this production powerhouse has emerged as one of West Africa’s most formidable sonic architectures, seamlessly fusing raw Highlife syncopations, dynamic Afrobeats, and polished contemporary pop arrangements. They are part of the collective known as Grey Ink.

Their journey to becoming Ghana’s premier production duo is rooted in distinct individual musical backgrounds. Isaac (Tough) started producing back around 2010 as a solo producer while mastering multiple instruments, including the bass guitar, lead guitar, and keyboard. He had produced for the likes of Ghanaian rapper Tinny by then. Gabriel (Ugly), on the other hand, began his musical path as a church drummer, playing rhythm for congregation services starting at age seven, and was actively pursuing a career as a rapper when the two met in the studio around 2014.

Recognizing Gabriel’s innate sense of timing from drumming, Isaac encouraged him to transition his rhythmic intuition onto software like Fruity Loops rather than relying on external beatmakers. Their chemistry gelled almost instantly: Gabriel took charge of designing crisp, complex drum patterns and percussive grooves, while Isaac layered rich instrumental progressions, guitars, and harmonies over the top.

What sets Ugly x Tough apart today is their boundary-pushing production philosophy and business-first mindset. Operating as both sound engineers and executive songwriters under their collective banner Gray Inc., they construct dense, textured soundscapes characterized by heavy percussive drives, deep basslines, and haunting melodic riffs. Beyond just supplying instrumental tracks, they shape complete song structures, provide subtle vocal backing harmonies, and strictly enforce split sheets to safeguard their intellectual property.

A major turning point in their meteoric rise was producing heavy-hitting chart-toppers like “Lomo Lomo” by KiDi and Black Sherif, alongside extensive work with rising stars like Kojo Blak. Tracks like “Down”, “Over Do”, and “Rugged” showcase their innate talent for framing emotional vocal narratives with booming, danceable backdrops. Signature elements, including their distinct reversed intro tag, announce their presence on top-charting tracks across West Africa.

Some of the hit songs the duo have produced include

  • KiDi ft. Black Sherif, “Lomo Lomo”
  • KiDi, Olivetheboy & KOJO BLAK, “Gymnastic
  • KOJO BLAK ft. Kelvyn Boy, “Excellent”
  • Camidoh, “Kaba”
  • Camidoh, “Big Mama”
  • Camidoh, “No More”
  • Deejay Eppz ft. Majeek, “Woyo”

As African music continues to dominate global charts, Ugly x Tough represent the brilliant future of sound engineering. Through continuous reinvention, multi-instrumental depth, and absolute dedication to their craft, Gabriel Adams and Isaac Nii Yemo Odoi aren’t just riding the Afrobeats wave, they are actively sculpting its next chapter.
