Sarkodie is best known for sharp bars and confident swagger, but “Non Living Thing,” featuring Nigerian singer Oxlade, shows a softer side. Released in July 2021 on the album No Pressure, it’s one of the most emotional tracks in his catalogue.

The song follows a man whose relationship has ended in a way he never saw coming. Sarkodie raps about losing the woman he loved to a wealthy rival, referred to as “Alhaji.” He recalls how long they had known each other, going all the way back to the early days of his career, and he can’t understand how things ended this way. There’s confusion, hurt, and a feeling that he somehow missed the signs.

The hook says it all. Without her, the narrator feels like a “non living thing,” an empty shell going through the motions. It’s a dramatic image, but it captures how heartbreak can make a person feel numb and disconnected from themselves.

Oxlade’s smooth, melodic chorus gives the track its emotional pull. While Sarkodie tells the story in his verses, Oxlade expresses the raw feeling behind it. Interestingly, Oxlade has said the song was originally meant for his own project before he decided it belonged to Sarkodie. The collaboration also helped introduce him to many Ghanaian listeners.
